The R.E.D.S Culture: Building a Biblical DNA (part 2)

Develop people to maximize their potential to become servant leaders!

As we study the life of Jesus, He was very intentional and strategic in gathering to himself people that he could personally train. He was concerned about the future effective and sustainable impact of his ministry. It has been said that anything structure of significance, be it an organization, a business, a nation or people must be built upon a strong leadership. In the context of the church, strong leadership is not a suggestion but a requirement. Leadership must be developed over time through a systematic process, it never occurs in a vacuum.

Leaders are made through relationships, knowledge, training and development, vision, discipline, hard work, purpose, experience and opportunities to grow! It is important to be intentional in the type of leadership we are developing, which is a direct result of the culture we have created. If we create a purposeful culture of value, inspiration, appreciation, mission, vision and excellence with a ‘people first’ mindset, then the essence of our leadership culture will produce inspired servant leaders. In (Philippians 2:7) it states that,“He (Jesus) took upon himself the form of a servant…” Jesus demonstrated to His disciples the type of leadership He desired them to become…servant leaders.  â€œThe Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:28).

Development of God-given potential is more than gifts, skills, talents and abilities but it is also the development of unconditional love, character, vision, perseverance, faith, diligence, patience and compassion, commitment and self-control. Jesus’ intentional focus on the leadership development of his team was to prepare them to expand his ministry and ensure a continuous stream of diverse leaders to carry on the mission of discipling the nations after He was gone.  Jesus said, “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.”(John 14:12).

The twenty first century church, just like the first century must fully invest and engage itself in the leadership development of its people if it is to be effective, impactful and influential in the culture as Christ followers and kingdom ambassadors!

Send them into their world to live on mission and fulfill their purpose!

It is amazing to me that anyone called by the Father is also sent by the Father. The mission of the church is to “Go” which means that the church is in the business of discipling and sending people. Jesus made this statement, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” (John 20:21).  As we look at Jesus’ ministry He was sent by the Father full of Grace & Truth (John 1:14). There is a sense of order, readiness and assurance when we are sent out with a specific purpose. When a country sends a person as an ambassador to represent its interest in a foreign land, the ambassador is sent with the authority, support and provision from their home country. The ambassador is never alone! The Father sends us into the culture as his ambassadors to be light and salt, representing the interests of the Kingdom of God.

We have been called forth to be His witnesses in the world by sharing His love and trust. Just before leaving His disciples, Jesus gave them what is referred to as the Great Commission, “Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'” (Matthew 28:18-20). A key lesson for every church to grasp and emulate is that as the first century church that was birth in the New Testament, made certain that a part of their calling was to send out Christ followers in the culture.

The moment we chose to live within the walls of our buildings is the moment we become a powerless, passionless irrelevant and purposeless church, only living to maintain never thriving to multiply and influence. Jesus said these words to his followers, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)
