The R.E.D.S Culture: Building a Biblical DNA (part 1)

Written by Pastor Vernon Phillip.

We are all about the R.E.D.S

Reach people with the Gospel.

Equip people to follow Christ.

Develop people to be Servant Leaders.

Send people to live on Mission.

Reach people with the life- giving message of the Gospel!

In the New Testament, we see repeatedly that we are commanded to “Go” and bring the glorious and precious Gospel to people. This Gospel was not just for a special selected group but whosoever will, let them hear and believe. It was no coincidence that Jesus Christ chose many of his team with a background in fishing before embarking on his public ministry. The industry of fishing requires the skill of reaching; just like the fish needs bait so do people need kind of bait. Bait, here is referring to something that will not only peak their interest but also engage their imagination, enlighten their intellect and enrich their souls (mind, will & emotions). They need something that will heal their hurts, restore their hopes, renew their minds and transform their hearts. The bait they need is the uncompromised Gospel, packaged in the person of Jesus Christ who represents the unconditional love of God for the diversity of peoples’ in the world.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son…” (John3:16.)

The church must become wiser at reaching those who are far from Christ and in need a savior. In a conversation with his disciples, Jesus said to them;

"It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” (Mark 2:17).

In (Luke 14: 15-24), Jesus told a parable of the Great Banquet. A master prepared a great banquet feast for those in his territory; however no one came to the banquet. So the master issued an order to his servant;

“So his master said, 'Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and urge anyone you find to come, so that the house will be full.” (Luke 14:23).

This parable reveals the heart of the heavenly Father, which is for his children to go and reach those who are far from him so that they may know and receive all that he has prepared for them in this life and in the life to come.

The command to “Go” means to “Reach”, by becoming a bridge builder into the lives of people and communities.

We must be committed to reach people by investing ourselves, sharing our faith and inviting them into our environments, so that they may encounter the love, grace, forgiveness, healing, hope and the truth of our Heavenly Father in Jesus Christ.

Equip people to experience life changing growth in God to follow Christ!

The Church must continue to create dynamic environments and opportunities for learning and practicing discipleship. The process of making disciples is not a one size fits all approach, the reason being that we all understand and learn differently. Take Jesus’ ministry, when he was teaching the multitudes on the mountain, he was equipping them in great numbers (Matthew 5-7). Likewise, when he tought his disciples to pray, he was equipping them in a smaller context (Luke 11:1-13). The process of corporate equipping is facilitated by leaders God has given to the church in (Ephesians 4:10).

The Apostle Paul says in (Ephesians 4:12), “Their responsibility is to equip God's people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ.” Today, there are many forms of equipping that is taking place in the body of Christ, the two most common are gatherings and groups.  Groups are a process of equipping that takes place in the context of a smaller and more intimate nucleus, where people choose to learn and grow together on a specific topic by being available and accountable to do life together in community. On the other hand, gathering in larger venues, allows equipping to take place in a more general context that can be applied to the broader congregation. However, the goal of being equipped is to have the character of Christ to be form into a person’s life at the core, in a manner that affects the way they live and engages the world. The purpose of equipping is to prepare the people to do the work of ministry.

We believe that the word and the cross is the bridge to get people from where they are in life to the place that God has planned for them to be.
